Britain, too, has produced its own generation of formidable karateka, whose skill and influence are recognised around the world. Sensei Steve Cattle, Sensei Terry O’Neill, Sensei Dave Hazard, Sensei Rick Jackson, and Sensei Aidan Trimble are among those who have trained with, taught, and inspired our senior instructors. In some cases, they were training partners; in others, they stood opposite each other in competition.
Every encounter taught a lesson – sometimes subtle, other times, particularly through the 70s and 80s, lessons could be harsh. In those days, hard contact and demanding sessions were part of the culture. You earned your progress not through ceremony, but by proving your spirit and your technique under pressure.
This wealth of knowledge – gathered over decades of dedicated practice and countless hours on the dojo floor – sets the WSKU apart. Here, karate-do is more than a sequence of movements; it is a living tradition, taught with the same respect, clarity, and commitment to excellence passed down by the masters who came before.
For those seeking to learn karate, rooted in both Japanese heritage and the best of British instruction, WSKU dojos offer a place where every class connects you to the proper budo.

In the dojos of the WSKU, the Shotokan karate we practise is the traditional budo handed down by some of the art’s most respected masters. Our instructors have trained under legendary Japanese senseis such as Asano, Kanazawa, Enoeda, Kato, Nagai, Kawasoe, and Ochi. These teachers shaped the character of Shotokan in the UK and Europe, demanding precision, spirit, and discipline – qualities we continue to instil in every student today.
